St. Joseph's Hill Secondary School
St. Joseph's Hill (c) Jim Redden 2009
Education in Uganda follows the structure of primary, secondary, and tertiary/university. Primary includes Primary 1 through Primary 7. Secondary consists of four years in Ordinary Level (Senior 1 through 4 O-level) and two years in Advanced Level (Senior 5 and 6 A-level). Uganda has many universities, Teacher Training Colleges, Business Colleges, and Vocational Institutions.
St. Joseph's Hill was founded in 1990 by the Congregation of the Holy Cross. St. Joseph is a private secondary school but it serves students from modest backgrounds from the local villages around it; it does not serve the elite. For the past 18 years, it has been an O-level secondary school, but this year was the first year it began teaching A-level. There are between 100 and 180 students in each of the levels Senior 1 through Senior 4, and currently there are only 9 students in Senior 5, but A-level education at St. Joseph will be expanding to Senior 6 with the current Senior 5 students and educating many more in A-level in the years to come.
St. Joseph finished construction of a brand new girls dormatory in January 2009 and approximately 30 girls stay on campus this year with plans to grow the boarding section. Because St. Joseph draws students from the rural villages of Kyarusozi, Kyembogo, and Kasaba, students walk between half a mile to 5 miles every day to get to school, so a boarding option is very beneficial for some students. A boys dormatory is set to be completed in 2010.
