Holy Cross in Kyarusozi, Uganda
With some Senior 1 girls
For eight weeks in May, June, July 2009, I lived with the Brothers of the Holy Cross in Kyarusozi, Uganda. Kyarusozi is a rural village in the western Ugandan district of Kyenjojo. I lived and worked here with one other Notre Dame student through the fully-funded International Summer Service Learning Program through the ND Center for Social Concerns. While in Kyarusozi, I taught Christian Religious Education at St. Joseph Hill Secondary School. I also spent time assisting the matron of the new girl’s dormitory, and I conducted a leadership training for the school prefects and class monitors. My life in the village with the Holy Cross brothers, priests, and seminarians was so joy-filled and afforded me endless time to pray and reflect, meet and play sports with people in the community, amazing conversations, a gorgeous set of surroundings to wake up to every morning, and a chance to learn about human struggles in rural Uganda. Some of these struggles were different from and some were profoundly similar to the struggles I witness in my American communities.
